Hunyadi Square Christmas
Hunyadi Square Christmas is a night-time cinematography project filmed in Budapest in 2024. The film documents Christmas decorative lights in a public urban space. In particular, it focuses on atmosphere, rhythm and visual clarity. Instead of presenting the lighting installation as a technical showcase, the project observes how the lights reshape the square after dark.
The film was created for Katazol Kft., a company specialized in the installation and operation of decorative lighting systems. Therefore, the main goal was to create a visually clean, mood-driven piece. As a result, the lights are supported through natural exposure, controlled camera movement and restrained editing. For this reason, the visual approach avoids excessive effects and focuses on spatial presence and authenticity.
Cinematography Concept
The cinematography relies primarily on existing decorative lights and organic camera movement. At the same time, framing and perspective place the viewer inside the scene rather than at a distance. In this way, compositions leave room for the surrounding environment and allow the lights to define the visual rhythm of the location.
Camera movement remains subtle and intentional. Instead of drawing attention to technique, it follows the rhythm created by the lights and the flow of the space. Consequently, this approach keeps the focus on atmosphere and visual continuity throughout the film.
Editing & Post-Production
Editing emphasizes continuity and timing rather than speed. For this reason, cuts stay measured and deliberate. They are guided by the music as well as by how the lights interact across shots. As a result, the film maintains a calm visual pace that allows details to register naturally.
Color work remains intentionally restrained. At the same time, the grading preserves the natural character of the lights and their contrast within the scene. In this way, it supports a cohesive visual language without pushing the image toward stylization.
